New version numbering system

0 Comments/ in Updates / by vik
July 23, 2009

After some discussion, we have decided on a new version numbering system for plumi. For the mathematically minded, the change is simply the addition of 2.7 to the current version numbers. So plumi 0.3 will become plumi 3.0. What would have been plumi 0.4 will be plumi 3.1. And so on. The reason for this change is to pin the major version number of plumi to the major version of plone that it targets. This could be done maintaining the current ’0.’ numbering system, but the 0 seemed redundant, and suggested the software is less mature than it is. Additionally, the development methodology is less one of major, feature-complete releases, and more one of Rapid Application Development, where features are added and bugs are fixed on the go.

The current roadmap for development is to release plumi 3.0 by the end of August, then move towards closing important, long-standing tickets for plumi 3.1 by the end of october. At the plone conference we will begin investigating plone 4 in order to begin the plumi 4.0 branch, while maintaining the 3.x branch for further improvements and bugfixes.

Looking for a Technical Coordinator

in Updates / by and
July 9, 2009

EngageMedia is looking for a Technical Projects Coordinator to manage, among other things, the Plumi project. The overall aim of the position is to bring together EngageMedia’s technology projects, build the strength of EngageMedia’s technical infrastructure and networks, and to ensure EngageMedia’s technology projects work towards the long-term social change strategy of the organisation.

Much of the work centres around the development of Plumi, our FOSS video distribution platform, and manifest in several different ways; such as the development of open source subtitling and translation tools, the coordination of training, networking and development events (such as a planned Plone/video sprint in Budapest and a small scale training camp in Indonesia), commercial consulting work (eg. http://criticalcommons.org) and the creation of technical documentation and user guides.

For more information on the position please see

Applications close July 29.

Kampung Halaman Indonesian Youth Video Archive

in Updates / by and
July 6, 2009

videodepot-logoEngageMedia has teamed up with Kampung Halaman to produce Video Depot, a local archive of video content using the Plumi software. Kampung Halaman is  an Indonesian based organisation using video to empower young people in  local communities to tell their own stories.

The Video Depot creates a home for these stories.

Six Video Depots will be installed around Indonesia allowing people rapid access to video materials that overcome the bandwidth limitations in Indonesia. The Video Depots will also tour to local villages where people can copy and re-distribute the open content licensed materials.

Whilst the aim is for the content to be accessed offline the site is available via the net, you can connect at http://depotvideo.kampunghalaman.org/ in order to check it out, though the connection is a little slow.
